“I had wanted to be a doctor since I was a little girl, but I never thought I was smart enough,” Dr. Lisa Ballantyne recalls. Though she tried many professions throughout her life, she always found herself drawn to, and dabbling in, health of one kind or the other.
“When I was running a lodging business, there was a feral kitten that I fell in love with,” she beams. “She had respiratory issues that conventional medicine couldn’t help with, so I started researching herbal medicines that I could give her. She started getting better, and although she was never healed completely, she went from a kitten they said wouldn’t live one year to one that I just recently lost at 13 years of age. It was at that moment, with my sweet little kitten, that I decided I needed to go to naturopathic medical school. I found that not only was I smart enough, if you want something bad enough, you can do anything.”
Lisa moved to Washington to attend school and started a residency in Port Orchard. "I soon realized that an insurance-based model was not something that was sustainable for me, and I decided to leave that practice and open my own in Gig Harbor," she says. "I believe in using whatever I can to help a patient, and with insurance my hands were often tied."
In 2018, she opened Dr. Lisa, MagosND Natural Medicine in Gig Harbor, and she is excited to share that she has moved her business to a more centralized location, right here in the harbor! Doors are now open at 3007 Judson Street, where Dr. Lisa, MagosND Natural Medicine will continue to provide superior naturopathic medical care, specializing in regenerative medicine as well as hormones, thyroid, adrenal and gut health.
Through regenerative medicine, Dr. Lisa offers orthopedic pain management using nutrition, supplementation, strength training and injection therapies such as prolotherapy, neural prolo, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and ozone therapy. In addition, she offers sexual health PRP for low libido, erectile disfunction and incontinence, as well as aesthetic PRP facelifts and microneedling facials with PRP.
Dr. Lisa shares that she was drawn to regenerative medicine for a couple of reasons: “The first, I had prolotherapy on my knee, and it made it so I could run again. But, more than that, my dad had two hip replacements—one that went well and one that didn’t. He ended up with multiple infections that he fought for years, and I believe was actually the cause of his early death.
“My goal is to help as many people as possible avoid joint replacements for as long as possible and to help them live with a higher quality of life than they are able to with pain.”
As a naturopathic physician, Dr. Lisa follows the following principles when guiding her patients in disease prevention and restoration: the inherent healing power of nature; identifying and treating the cause; first do no harm; treating the whole person; doctor as teacher; and prevention.
When not helping her patients on their journey to healing, Lisa enjoys working out at Better Gym. In addition to having PRP and prolotherapy injections herself, getting strong has been key to her own journey in becoming pain free. “Susan Moore is a master at helping people do this in a safe and effective way,” Lisa affirms.
She surrounds herself with those she loves: her partner, and their many animals: Red, her horse, two dogs Moki (10 months) and Chloe (3 years old), and cat Eliot (9). “We love to be outdoors going for walks, exploring farmers markets, listening to live music and going on adventures,” she smiles. “We love hanging out with friends and family, as well as traveling.”
Dr. Lisa has also established a 501c(3) nonprofit called Wild Roots Wellness (WildRootsWellness.org) to help people who otherwise would not be able to afford naturopathic medical care.
For those who prefer a more natural, holistic approach to healing and wellness, Dr. Lisa welcomes you to call her today to get started on your road to health.
