Northern Asphalt LLC in Kitsap County has been on the road to success since it was established 16 years ago. Owned and operated by Michael and Sharon Meeker, this family-owned business represents hard work, hometown pride, and superior quality. Northern Asphalt is one of the leading paving companies, providing reliable services for residential, commercial, and public paving projects.
Michael’s journey into the construction industry began early, with him learning a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial skills while working alongside his grandfather and mastering heavy equipment operation under his guidance. With over 35 years of experience in the industry, Michael decided to take a leap of faith and start Northern Asphalt after being laid off from a previous job. “Year after year, we just kept growing. The name was branded, and we were the only asphalt company in Kitsap County,” he explains. Today, Sharon runs the internal operations, balancing business responsibilities while supporting their now-grown children. Together, they have built a company that thrives on hard work and family values.
Northern Asphalt offers various services, including paving, excavation, milling, drainage, sealcoating, and site work. As general contractors, they can do it all, offering onsite services to assist homeowners who need guidance. They specialize in maintenance services such as seal coating, striping, stenciling, and winter work like snow plowing and de-icing. What sets them apart is their use of recycled asphalt. “We make our own recycled asphalt; our competition doesn’t do that,” Michael notes. “It’s a great use of asphalt with dirt roads that keep the dust down and compacts beautifully.” This forward-thinking approach ensures environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions for their clients.
From Bell Creek Plaza in Sequim to St. Michael’s Hospital in Silverdale, Northern Asphalt has worked on many high-profile projects. Their team’s expertise and passion are evident in their work. “We all contribute to the success of our projects,” Michael points out. “We have high standards and are respectful and professional.” The company’s attitude towards forming long-term partnerships comes across in their work. Michael describes a special connection with a Vietnam veteran, Richard, who regularly sends cards and photos to show his appreciation to the Northern Asphalt team. “It’s rewarding to know the relationships we make mean something to our clients beyond the completion of a job,” he shares.
Community involvement is also a central component of Northern Asphalt’s philosophy. The company actively participates in local activities such as Touch a Truck and Viking Fest, sponsoring youth sports teams and supplying uniforms. “We are not just in the community; we are a part of it,’ Michael adds. Their generosity extends to donating services to those in need, making them valued members of the community.
Northern Asphalt takes pride in remaining technologically current, primarily through the use of recycled materials. They employ recycled asphalt, especially useful for Washington’s rainy environment. "It lets water flow through the asphalt, which helps keep a driveway or parking lot from flooding in a rainstorm," Michael says. This material is practical and sustainable, a good substitute for more conventional paving solutions, as it is durable and economical.
As the company looks to the future, its motto, “Paving the way to the future,” continues to guide its mission. Coined by Sharon’s father in 2009, the slogan remains as relevant as ever. For the Meekers, running Northern Asphalt is about more than paving roads; it’s about building lasting connections and contributing to the community they love.
